Why Xiamen works for a layover

Xiamen is one of China’s most pleasant cities: a subtropical island with colonial-era architecture, a leafy university campus, and some of the best seafood on the coast. The airport is unusually close to the center, which makes it a genuinely easy layover.

The route

Head first to Zhongshan Road for the pedestrian street and old-town feel, then take the ferry to Gulangyu Island: a car-free island of colonial villas, gardens, and viewpoints. If you are short on time, skip the island and visit Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University instead. Finish at Zengcuoan Village for seafood and cafés.

Food to try

Oyster omelette, satay noodles, fish ball soup, and the Fujian specialty fotiaoqiang (a complex braised soup). Xiamen is a seafood city above all.

Timing notes

The airport is only 20–30 minutes from the center, which gives you more usable time than most Chinese hubs. But Gulangyu ferry tickets are capacity-limited and sell out: book online in advance and arrive early, or plan around it.
