Why Guilin works for a layover
Guilin is the landscape on the back of the twenty-yuan note: limestone karst peaks rising out of flat river plains. It is one of the most photographed places in China and, for travelers on a longer transit stop, one of the most rewarding.
The route
In the city itself, start at Elephant Trunk Hill, then visit the Reed Flute Cave with its illuminated limestone formations. In the evening, the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area is lit up and pleasant to walk. With a full day or an overnight, add the Li River cruise to Yangshuo: the signature experience, and a morning departure.
Food to try
Guilin rice noodles (mifen), the local staple, cheap and excellent, plus beer fish (a Yangshuo specialty) and stuffed river snails.
Timing notes
The Li River cruise is a half-day commitment with a morning departure, so it does not fit a short layover. With 10+ hours, stick to the city sights and the evening lakes. With 24+ hours, overnight in Guilin or Yangshuo and do the river properly.
Before you go
