Why Guangzhou works for a layover

Guangzhou is China’s food capital and one of its most relaxed big cities. It’s a great layover if you’re flying between Southeast Asia and Europe. The airport is huge and well connected, and the city rewards slow wandering more than checklist sightseeing.

The route

Take Metro Line 3 to Canton Tower for the skyline, then switch to Line 6 for Shamian Island: a leafy former concession area perfect for a walk and coffee. Finish near Beijing Road for shopping and street food before heading back. If food is your priority, skip the tower and go straight to a proper dim sum lunch.

Food to try

Dim sum (har gow, siu mai, char siu bao), roast goose, double-skin milk dessert, and anything from a busy street stall.

Timing notes

Baiyun Airport is about 40 minutes from the center by metro. Immigration can be slow at peak hours: leave a real buffer for your onward flight.
