Why Chongqing works for a layover

Chongqing is the city that breaks the internet: monorails threading through apartment blocks, a riverside skyline stacked up hillsides, and a night view that looks like a film set. It is also the hotpot capital of China. If your route passes through western China, it is one of the most memorable short stops you can make.

The route

Take Metro Line 10 from Jiangbei Airport to the Jiefangbei area. Start at the Liziba viewpoint, where Line 2 runs straight through a residential building. Ride the Yangtze River Cableway across the river, explore the steep stairway neighborhoods, then finish at Hongyadong: an 11-storey stilted complex best seen illuminated at night. If you have more time, Ciqikou ancient town is a half-day add-on.

Food to try

Chongqing hotpot with the nine-grid pot, chuan chuan skewers, xiaomian (spicy noodles), and suanlafen (hot-and-sour sweet potato noodles). Ask for mild if you are unsure. The default is genuinely spicy.

Timing notes

Line 10 reaches the center in 40–50 minutes, so 8 hours is workable and 12 is comfortable. Budget extra time for the hills and traffic if you take a taxi, and be back at the airport 2.5 hours before an international departure.

Combine with Chengdu

Chongqing and Chengdu are about 1.5 hours apart by high-speed rail, so longer transit stops can pair the two. See the Chengdu layover guide for the other half.
