Why Qingdao works for a layover

Qingdao is one of China’s most distinctive cities: a former German concession that left behind red-roofed villas, a cathedral, and a brewery culture that became the country’s most famous beer. It sits on the Yellow Sea with a long, walkable waterfront.

The route

Start at Zhanqiao Pier for the classic view of the pavilion on the water. Walk to St. Michael’s Cathedral, then along the waterfront to the Badaguan Scenic Area: a district of villas and quiet tree-lined streets. Finish at the Tsingtao Brewery Museum for the history and a tasting, and May Fourth Square for the modern skyline.

Food to try

Fresh seafood (clams, prawns, sea snails), jiaozhi dumplings, and of course Tsingtao beer, best drunk at a street-side beer hall in the old town.

Timing notes

Qingdao Jiaodong Airport is about 50–60 minutes from the center by Metro Line 8, so allow for that transfer. The upside is that the classic sights are clustered along the waterfront and easily walkable. With under 6 hours, stay at the airport.
