The short answer

You need roughly 8 hours at TFU before leaving the airport is worthwhile, and 10+ hours to be comfortable. Metro Line 18 gets you to Chengdu in about 35–40 min to the city. TFU is a designated port under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, covering 11 cities in Sichuan (Chengdu, Zigong, Luzhou, Deyang, Suining, Neijiang, Leshan, Yibin, Ya’an, Meishan, Ziyang).

Getting into Chengdu

  • Metro Line 18

    Traffic-proof

Express metro link. Fast and reliable, though Tianfu is genuinely far out.

    Time
    35–40 min to the city
    Cost
    ¥7–10
  • Taxi / DiDi

    Can be delayed

Worth it if you are heading straight to the panda base outside the centre.

What fits in each window

  1. Under 7 hours

    Stay airside

Tianfu is far from the centre, so a short layover leaves no usable time.

  2. 8–9 hours

    Pandas, if you land early

The Panda Base is the draw and pandas are most active before 10am. This only works with a morning arrival.

  3. 10–12 hours

    Pandas plus a teahouse

Panda Base in the morning, then People’s Park for tea and Jinli Street for snacks.

  4. 24 hours

    A food trip

Add Kuanzhai Alley, a serious hotpot dinner, and a Sichuan opera face-changing show.

Luggage storage

Left-luggage counters in the terminal; confirm the current location and hours at the airport.

Cost: ¥15–30 per bag per day (indicative)

TFU traps to avoid

  • Landing after midday means you will miss the pandas, they sleep through the afternoon.
  • Tianfu is far from the centre. Do not budget the same as for a close-in airport.
  • Panda Base tickets are passport-linked and busy; book ahead.
  • Two airlines run a free transit hotel at Chengdu: Sichuan Airlines for ticket numbers starting 876, and Air China under its Transit Accommodation rules. Neither accepts a booking on the day, so claim it before you fly.

Transfer times, fares, and operating hours change. Verify against the airport’s own transport page and the National Immigration Administration before you book.
