The short answer

You need roughly 8 hours at PKX before leaving the airport is worthwhile, and 12+ hours to be comfortable. Daxing Airport Express gets you to Beijing in about 30–40 min to Caoqiao (Line 10). PKX is a designated port under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, covering Beijing municipality.

Getting into Beijing

  • Daxing Airport Express

    Traffic-proof

Then Metro Line 10, 14, or 16 onward. Fast and traffic-proof.

    Time
30–40 min to Caoqiao (Line 10)
    Cost
    ¥35
  • Taxi / DiDi

    Can be delayed

The airport is far south, so road transfers are long and traffic-dependent.

What fits in each window

  1. Under 7 hours

    Stay airside

Daxing is far enough out that a short layover does not leave usable city time.

  2. 8–10 hours

    One downtown sight

Temple of Heaven or a hutong walk, with a strict return plan. Not enough for the Forbidden City and a meal.

  3. 12 hours

    A real Beijing day

The Forbidden City plus Jingshan Park becomes feasible, but the drive is long at both ends.

  4. 24 hours+

    A proper stopover

Overnight in the city. Add Mutianyu for the Great Wall, a private car is the only realistic option.

Luggage storage

Left-luggage counters in the terminal; confirm the current location and hours at the airport.

Cost: ¥15–30 per bag per day (indicative)

PKX traps to avoid

  • Daxing is roughly twice as far from the centre as Capital Airport. Everything takes longer.
  • A PEK↔PKX connection is a 1.5–2 hour transfer across the city, do not add sightseeing to one.
  • Allow 2.5 hours at the airport before an international departure.

Transfer times, fares, and operating hours change. Verify against the airport’s own transport page and the National Immigration Administration before you book.
