The short answer

Set up WeChat Pay as your backup to Alipay, and set up WeChat itself whether or not you pay with it. In China, WeChat is how you book tickets, get hotel messages, and coordinate with drivers. Skipping it leaves you stuck at counters that assume you have it.

Why you need WeChat, not just Alipay

Alipay is the better wallet for foreign cards. WeChat does things Alipay does not:

  • Mini-programs, many attractions sell tickets through WeChat mini-programs, but the Palace Museum (Forbidden City) runs its own multilingual booking site where visitors from outside mainland China register with email and passport and pay by international card, so WeChat is not required for those tickets.
  • Hotel and driver messaging: check-in details and pickup pins often arrive over WeChat.
  • A second payment rail, when one app fails at a vendor, the other usually works.

Set up WeChat Pay

  1. Download WeChat and register with your own phone number.
  2. Complete real-name verification with your passport (Me → Services → Wallet → Real-Name Verification).
  3. Add a card (Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards → Add a Card) and confirm the SMS code from your bank.
  4. Match your details exactly: the name on the card must match your passport. Virtual and prepaid cards are generally refused.
  5. Test a small payment at a convenience store.

Fees and limits

The structure mirrors Alipay: ¥200 or less is normally fee-free; above ¥200 typically adds ~3%. Foreign-issued UnionPay cards are usually exempt. Spending is capped by your verification level, your bank, and the app’s own account limits (¥6,500 per transaction, ¥50,000 per month, ¥65,000 per year). Those sit far below the regulatory ceiling of roughly US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 per year. Tencent has periodically offered new-card promotions, read the in-app prompt rather than relying on any blog.

Where TenPayGo fits in

TenPayGo is Tencent’s separate app for foreign visitors, launched on 24 September 2026. Until now, paying with a foreign card in China meant setting up WeChat or Alipay and completing passport verification inside them. TenPayGo is the first Tencent app built for visitors from the ground up, and it removes the two biggest friction points:

  • Sign-up is by email, so you do not need a Chinese phone number or a Chinese bank account.
  • It accepts what you already have: international cards from seven major networks (UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard and others), around 60 overseas digital wallets, and Apple Pay.

Payments run on the WeChat Pay merchant network, so the same shops, restaurants and transport operators accept it. Beyond paying, Tencent is adding visitor-specific features: a transit QR code for Shenzhen’s metro and buses, a “circle to explain” tool and a “scan and translate” tool for menus and signs, and in-app tax-refund requests.

Two honest caveats. These extras are still rolling out, so treat the transit and tax-refund features as “check inside the app” rather than guaranteed. And TenPayGo is a payment channel, not a replacement for WeChat itself: hotel messages, driver pins, and tickets for some attractions still run through WeChat mini-programs, which TenPayGo does not cover.

So: if you can complete passport verification in WeChat or Alipay, do that first, because you will want WeChat installed anyway. If you are stuck on a Chinese phone number, or you want one app dedicated to travel, TenPayGo is now the simplest way in.

Troubleshooting

  • Payment declined? Your bank may have flagged China. Call them before you travel and enable foreign transactions.
  • Merchant shows a personal QR? Foreign cards cannot pay into personal accounts. Ask for the merchant code, switch apps, or use cash.
  • Verification stuck? Re-do the passport photo somewhere bright; a blurry image or a name mismatch is the usual cause.

Bottom line

Install both Alipay and WeChat before you fly, verify your passport in each, and link your card. Use Alipay as the wallet and WeChat for bookings and as the backup rail. See Alipay for foreigners and payments in China.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need WeChat Pay if I already have Alipay?

Alipay covers payments, but WeChat is also China’s booking and messaging layer, hotel check-in chats and driver pickup pins often run through WeChat mini-programs, which have no Alipay equivalent. Some attractions sell tickets through WeChat mini-programs, but the Palace Museum (Forbidden City) runs its own booking site where visitors from outside mainland China register with email and passport and pay by international card.

Can foreigners link an international card to WeChat Pay?

Yes. Register with your home phone number, complete real-name verification with your passport, then add your Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover, or Diners Club card, or an overseas-issued UnionPay card. Virtual and prepaid cards are usually rejected.

What fees does WeChat Pay charge on foreign cards?

Like Alipay, single payments of ¥200 or less are typically fee-free and amounts above ¥200 carry about a 3% fee. Tencent has also run limited-time fee waivers for newly linked cards, check the prompt in the app.

What is TenPayGo?

TenPayGo is Tencent’s own payment app for foreign visitors, launched on 24 September 2026. You register with an email address, so you do not need a Chinese phone number or a Chinese bank account, then link an international card, an overseas wallet, or Apple Pay to pay anywhere WeChat Pay is accepted.

Do I need a Chinese phone number to use TenPayGo?

No. TenPayGo signs you up with an email address, which is its main advantage over the older approach. WeChat Pay itself also accepts foreign phone numbers, but it still requires real-name verification with your passport.
