You can order from Taobao before you land, have it delivered to your hotel in China, and carry it home in your suitcase. You don’t need a Chinese ID, a Chinese bank account, or a shipping agent. Most orders land in one to three days, so any stay of 48 hours or more in one city works, whether that is a two-week trip or a short layover.

Taobao is China’s largest online marketplace. Clothes, phone accessories, home goods, cosplay, stationery and gadgets often cost a fraction of what the same items cost on Amazon. Most sellers only ship inside China, which is why a trip to China is the perfect window: for a few days, you have a Chinese address.

The 30-second version:

  1. Book a hotel where you’ll stay at least two nights.
  2. Install Taobao and sign up with your own phone number.
  3. Link a Visa or Mastercard through Alipay.
  4. Add your hotel’s address in Chinese as the delivery address.
  5. Order 2–4 days before you arrive, and pick the fastest shipping.
  6. Collect your parcels at the hotel front desk.
  7. Check airline rules (especially power banks) before you pack.

Before you start

Taobao works for any trip to China, from a two-week holiday to a 72-hour layover. What matters is time in one place: parcels usually take 1–3 days inside China, so plan to stay at least 48 hours in one city, at a hotel that can receive them.

On a layover? Citizens of 57 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and the EU, can leave the airport and stay up to 10 days under China’s 240-hour visa-free transit, as long as they fly on to a third country. See our 240-hour visa-free transit guide for the full rules, and check the National Immigration Administration for the latest updates before you book.

What you need

  • A smartphone with mobile data in China. Taobao and Alipay work normally on Chinese networks; an eSIM set up before you fly or roaming is fine.
  • Your own phone number that can receive SMS. You’ll use it to sign up. Avoid virtual or VoIP numbers, which often get rejected.
  • A Visa, Mastercard, JCB or Amex card. Tell your bank you’ll be paying in China.
  • A confirmed hotel booking for the nights your parcels will arrive. You’ll need its address in Chinese.
  • Your passport, for Alipay verification if you plan to spend more.

Step 1: Install Taobao and create an account

Do this at home, a week before you fly, so you have time to fix any SMS problems.

  1. Download Taobao (淘宝) from the App Store or Google Play. The icon is orange with the character 淘. Use the app, not the website; the app is easier for foreigners.
  2. Tap Sign up / 注册.
  3. Change the country code (it defaults to +86) to your own, for example +1, +44 or +61, and enter your mobile number.
  4. Complete the slider puzzle if one appears, then enter the SMS code.
  5. Set a password and a nickname.

If the SMS code doesn’t arrive: check the country code, wait a couple of minutes, and try once more. Codes from Chinese platforms can be slow, and some carriers silently filter them. Don’t keep retrying; after several attempts you may be rate-limited for a few hours. Another option is to install Alipay first and use it to log in to Taobao.

Switching to English

Depending on your region and app version, you may find a language option under 我的 (Me) → 设置 (Settings) → 语言 (Language). If it isn’t there, use your phone’s built-in screen translation: Live Text or the Translate app on iPhone, or Circle to Search / Google Lens on Android. Product pages and reviews also often have a translate button.

Step 2: Set up payment with Alipay

Taobao checkout runs through Alipay (支付宝), which has accepted foreign cards since 2023. You link your card once in Alipay, and every Taobao order is charged to it.

  1. Download Alipay and sign up with the same phone number you used for Taobao.
  2. Go to Me → Bank Cards and add your Visa, Mastercard, JCB or Amex.
  3. Confirm with your bank. Alipay may run a small test charge or your bank may send a one-time code.
  4. Optional but recommended: verify your passport in Alipay. It raises your spending limits.

At checkout on Taobao, tap 提交订单 (Submit order), choose Alipay, and the app hands you over to Alipay to confirm the payment.

Fees and limits

  • ¥200 or less per payment: no Alipay fee.
  • Over ¥200 per payment: Alipay charges about 3%. New users sometimes get a promotion that waives this; check the Alipay app.
  • Your bank may add its own foreign transaction fee (often 1–3%). A no-foreign-fee card helps.
  • Large payments may be declined by your bank as suspicious. Keep your banking app handy to approve them.

Fees and caps change often, so treat these as guidelines. The Alipay guide tracks the current account limits, and the app shows the fee before you confirm.

Step 3: Find what to buy

The easiest way to search is with a photo. Tap the camera icon in the search bar (拍立淘) and upload a screenshot, for example from TikTok, Instagram or Amazon. Taobao shows visually similar listings, often from dozens of sellers.

To search with words, translate your keyword into Chinese first (Google Translate or DeepL is fine) and paste it in. Short, simple keywords work best, such as 蓝牙耳机 (Bluetooth earbuds) rather than a full sentence.

How to pick a good listing

What to check Where to find it What you want
Sales volume 已售 / 月销 under the price Hundreds or thousands sold
Photo reviews 评价 tab → 有图 (with photos) Real buyer photos that match the listing
Store type Store badge 天猫 (Tmall) or 旗舰店 (flagship store) is the safest
Ships from 发货地 on the listing The same province as your hotel arrives fastest
Delivery promise Shipping line on the listing 顺丰 (SF Express) or 24小时发货 (ships in 24 hours)
Returns Tags under the price 七天无理由退货 (7-day no-reason return), 退货宝 / 运费险 (free return shipping)

Tmall vs Taobao: Tmall (天猫) is Taobao’s section for official brand stores. It costs a bit more but is much more reliable, which matters when you only have a few days. Regular Taobao shops are cheaper and have far more variety.

Choose a variant. Most listings have several colours or sizes (规格 / 颜色分类). The price shown on search results is often the cheapest variant, so check the final price after you choose. Chinese clothing sizes run small; check the size chart (尺码表) in centimetres and size up if unsure.

Skip fakes. Avoid listings that sell “designer” items at a fraction of the price. Counterfeits can be seized by customs when you return home.

Step 4: Choose where to receive it

Ship to your hotel. Hotels in China receive guest parcels all the time, the front desk holds them for you, and you don’t need a Chinese phone number to collect them. Your hotel registers your stay with the police automatically at check-in, so there is nothing extra to do on that side.

Ask the hotel first

Message the hotel through your booking app or by email a few days before you order. Copy and send this:

您好!我是[入住日期]入住的客人 [YOUR NAME],预订号 [BOOKING NUMBER]。我在淘宝买了一些东西,会寄到酒店。请问前台可以帮我代收快递吗?如果可以,快递上可以写前台的电话吗?谢谢!

(Hello! I’m [YOUR NAME], checking in on [DATE], booking number [NUMBER]. I’ve ordered some things on Taobao that will be delivered to the hotel. Could the front desk receive the parcels for me? If so, may I put the front desk’s phone number on the delivery? Thank you!)

Ask for the hotel’s address in Chinese if it isn’t on your booking. You can also copy it from the hotel’s page on Trip.com, Amap (高德地图) or Baidu Maps.

Add the address in Taobao

Go to 我的 (Me) → 收货地址 (Shipping addresses) → 新增地址 (Add address). Tip: paste the whole Chinese address into the smart-fill box at the top and Taobao fills in the fields for you.

Field What to enter Example
收货人 (Recipient) Your name exactly as on the hotel booking John Smith
手机号码 (Phone) The hotel front desk’s number (with their OK), or your own number 021-xxxx-xxxx
所在地区 (Region) Province, city and district 上海市 黄浦区
详细地址 (Street address) Street + number + hotel name in Chinese + a note for the front desk 南京东路 123号 XX酒店 前台代收 (住客 John Smith, 10月25日入住)

前台代收 means “please leave with the front desk”. The check-in date helps staff find you even before you’ve arrived.

Other options

  • Parcel stations (菜鸟驿站) and parcel lockers (快递柜, such as 丰巢 Hive Box) are everywhere in Chinese cities. If the courier can’t deliver to the hotel, your parcel may end up at one nearby. You collect it with a pickup code (取件码) sent by SMS or shown in the Taobao app.
  • Airports are not a delivery option: there is no one to receive the parcel for you, so always use your hotel.

Step 5: Place the order at the right time

Order 2–4 days before you check in if the hotel agreed to hold parcels for you, or on your first morning if not. Taobao works fine from abroad, so you can order from home.

How long it takes, in total:

  • Seller ships: usually within 24–72 hours. Look for 24小时发货 or 48小时发货 on the listing.
  • Delivery: same province often next day; across China usually 2–3 days. SF Express (顺丰) is the fastest courier.
  • Your safety margin: plan for everything to arrive at least one full day before you leave.

Avoid these delays

  • Pre-sale items (预售): these ship in weeks, not days. Check the listing for 预售 or a ship date like 11月20日前发货.
  • Shopping festivals: around Double 11 (11 November) and 618 (18 June), prices drop but couriers are slower. Add an extra day or two.
  • Custom or made-to-order items (定制): they can take a week or more to make.

Message the seller

Every shop has a chat button (客服). Paste in a short message to confirm the ship date, for example:

你好,我[日期]就要离开中国了。请问今天能发货吗?可以发顺丰吗?谢谢!

(Hi, I’m leaving China on [date]. Can you ship today? Can you use SF Express? Thanks!)

Sellers usually reply within minutes, and many will upgrade to SF Express for a small fee.

Track your parcel

Go to 我的 (Me) → 待收货 (To be received) → 查看物流 (View logistics). You’ll see each scan, and 派送中 means it’s out for delivery. If a parcel hasn’t shipped within 48 hours, nudge the seller in chat.

Step 6: Pick up your package

At the hotel: when tracking shows 已签收 (signed for), go to the front desk and say:

我有快递。 (Wǒ yǒu kuàidì.) “I have a delivery.”

Show your room number and the tracking screen in the Taobao app (courier name and tracking number), since staff may need to find it among many parcels. If several parcels are coming, ask the desk to call your room when each arrives: 快递到了请打电话到房间,谢谢。 (Please call my room when parcels arrive. Thank you.)

At a parcel station (菜鸟驿站): the tracking page shows the station’s address and your pickup code (取件码), for example 3-2-1045. Show the code to the staff or find the shelf yourself, then scan out at the counter.

At a locker (快递柜): enter the pickup code on the locker screen, or scan the QR code with Alipay. The door pops open.

Check before you confirm. Open each parcel at the hotel and make sure it’s what you ordered. Only then tap 确认收货 (Confirm receipt), which releases the payment to the seller. If something’s wrong, start a return before you leave (see below).

Flying out with your haul

Most Taobao purchases are no problem to fly with. A few categories need care, and power banks are the big one.

Power banks and batteries

  • Since 28 June 2025, China’s civil aviation authority bans power banks without a valid 3C (CCC) mark on domestic flights, and recalls can remove a model from cabin bags even if it is marked. That rule covers flights inside China. For an international departure, your airline’s own rules apply, and most carriers still require the 3C mark on anything bought in China.
  • If you buy a power bank, choose one that shows the 3C mark in the listing photos (search 充电宝 3C认证) and check the capacity. The usual airline limit is 100 Wh (about 27,000 mAh) without approval.
  • Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in your carry-on, never your checked bag.

Other things to pack carefully

Item Where it goes
Liquids, creams, gels over 100 ml Checked bag
Knives, scissors, tools Checked bag
Electronics with built-in batteries Carry-on is safest
Anything that looks like a weapon (cosplay props, toy guns) Check your airline’s rules first

Customs back home

You pay duty on what you bring home if it’s above your country’s personal allowance. Common examples, which you should confirm with your own customs authority before you fly: US $800 for returning residents, EU €430 for air travellers, UK £390, Australia A$900.

Keep your Taobao order screenshots as receipts. Don’t bring counterfeit branded goods; they can be seized.

Packing tip: remove bulky boxes and packaging at the hotel. If you’ve overbought, a cheap suitcase on Taobao costs less than an extra-bag fee.

Returns, refunds and troubleshooting

Return while you’re still in China. Once you’ve flown home, returning an item is impractical, so check everything at the hotel.

  1. Open the order: 我的 (Me) → 我的订单 (My orders) → the item → 退款/售后 (Refund / After-sales).
  2. Choose 退货退款 (Return and refund) and a reason. 七天无理由 means you don’t need a reason.
  3. Choose 上门取件 (Courier pickup) and enter the hotel address. A courier collects the parcel, usually within a day. If the listing had 退货宝 or 运费险, return shipping is free.
  4. The refund goes back to your card once the seller receives the item, typically within a few days.

If the seller won’t cooperate, tap 申请平台介入 (Ask Taobao to step in). Taobao usually sides with buyers who have photos.

Common problems

Problem What to do
Card declined at checkout Approve the payment in your banking app, try a smaller amount, or add a second card
Seller hasn’t shipped after 48 hours Message the seller; if it’s too late, cancel with 申请退款 (Request refund) before it ships
Parcel went to a parcel station Open tracking for the station address and pickup code
Parcel won’t arrive before you leave Ask the seller to intercept it (拦截) and request a refund; tell the hotel to refuse it
The item is wrong or damaged Take photos, then start a return right away

Checklist and sample timeline

For a 3-day stop in one city, on a longer trip or a layover, do the setup at home, have parcels arrive on day 1 or 2, and keep day 3 for packing.

When What to do
Before you fly Create the account, link the card, confirm the hotel will hold parcels, place orders 2–4 days before check-in
Day 1, on arrival Check in, collect anything already delivered, confirm the rest are in transit
Day 1, evening Message any seller that has not shipped, then check tracking again
Day 2, morning Collect the remaining parcels at the front desk or the parcel station
Day 2, afternoon Open and check every item, and start a return now if something is wrong
Day 3 Repack without the boxes, keep the order screenshots for customs, fly out

Day 2 is the target: it leaves a full day to chase a late parcel or start a return.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Chinese phone number or bank account to use Taobao?

No. A foreign phone number that can receive SMS is enough to register, and a foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB or Amex card linked through Alipay pays for the order. You do not need a Chinese ID or a Chinese bank account.

Do I need to speak Chinese to shop on Taobao?

No. Photo search, the translate button on listings, and the copy-paste messages in this guide cover the whole process. The app is easier than the website for foreigners.

Do I need WeChat to use Taobao?

No. Taobao and Alipay are all you need. WeChat Pay is a useful backup for payments in shops, but it is not part of the Taobao flow.

Can a Taobao seller ship to my home country instead?

Very few do. Most sellers ship inside mainland China only. Getting an order shipped abroad needs a parcel forwarder or shipping agent, which is a different process and a different guide.

Can I bring Taobao food purchases home?

Packaged snacks are usually fine, but many countries restrict meat, dairy, fruit and seeds. Check your customs authority before you pack, and keep the order screenshots as receipts.
