The short answer
No, Google Maps is not reliable in mainland China. Google services are blocked, and China’s mapping data is often offset or incomplete anyway. Use Amap (高德地图) or Baidu Maps for navigation, and keep Google Maps only as something that might work over a travel eSIM.
What’s blocked and what isn’t
| Service | On a local Chinese network | Over a travel eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Blocked | Usually works |
| Gmail | Blocked | Usually works |
| Restricted | Usually works | |
| Instagram / Facebook / X | Blocked | Usually works |
| Amap / Baidu Maps | Works | Works |
| Alipay / WeChat Pay | Works | Works |
| Apple Maps | Partially works | Partially works |
Apple Maps is a partial exception. It is available on iPhones in China and uses local data, though detail and English quality vary.
Why “it loads” does not mean “it works”
China’s mapping coordinates are deliberately offset from global GPS standards. That means even when Google Maps renders, the pin can sit in the wrong place relative to the real street. This is a well-known cause of travelers being dropped at the wrong entrance or the wrong side of a river.
Use a Chinese map app and the problem disappears.
The map apps that actually work
| App | Language | Best for | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amap (Gaode, 高德地图) | English available | The default for foreign visitors: metro, bus and walking directions, and finding a place by its English name | Works everywhere in mainland China |
| Baidu Maps (百度地图) | Chinese-first | Finding a Chinese address, deepest local coverage | Works everywhere in mainland China |
| Apple Maps | Localised | iPhone users who want the built-in app | Partly works in China on local data; detail and English quality vary |
| Google Maps | English | Nothing useful while you are on a Chinese network | Only over a travel eSIM, and the coordinate offset still applies |
Install Amap before you fly. The reason is not convenience, it is that app-store behaviour inside China is unpredictable, and you do not want to be solving it on airport Wi-Fi. Both Amap and Baidu Maps are free.
Amap (Gaode)
- Best English support among the Chinese map apps.
- Reliable metro, bus, and walking directions.
- Good for finding a destination by its English name.
Baidu Maps
- Deepest coverage of Chinese addresses.
- Strong once you can paste or scan a Chinese address.
Both handle the coordinate-offset problem natively, which is the part Google Maps cannot fix.
Will a travel eSIM bring Google back?
Usually, yes. A travel eSIM from Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad routes your data through a partner network outside mainland China, so Google Maps, Gmail, and WhatsApp frequently keep working with no separate VPN. That is the main reason travelers buy an eSIM rather than a local SIM, see Best eSIM for China and eSIM vs VPN vs roaming.
Two caveats:
- Coverage varies. Some providers and some plans route differently.
- Even working Google Maps has the offset problem. Use Amap for anything where the exact entrance matters.
Practical navigation setup
- Install Amap and Baidu Maps at home, before you fly, see the China apps checklist.
- Download an offline map area for each city you will visit.
- Save your hotel’s Chinese address as a screenshot. It works for taxis and DiDi.
- Keep a translation app with camera mode for signs and menus.
Bottom line
Treat Google Maps as unreliable in China and Amap as your default. If you want Google services back for messaging and email, a travel eSIM is the simplest route. Read the eSIM setup guide before you fly.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Maps blocked in China?
Google services are blocked in mainland China, so Google Maps generally does not load or update reliably. Even where it partially works, its China mapping data can be inaccurate or offset.
What should I use instead of Google Maps in China?
Use Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps. Amap has the better English interface and solid public-transit directions; Baidu Maps has deep Chinese-language coverage. Download an offline area before you fly as a backup.
Does a travel eSIM make Google Maps work in China?
Often yes. Travel eSIMs from providers like Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad route your data through a network outside mainland China, so Google services frequently keep working without a separate VPN.
What is the best map app for China?
Amap (Gaode). It has the best English support of the Chinese map apps, reliable metro, bus and walking directions, and will find a destination by its English name. Baidu Maps is the fallback when you have a Chinese address to paste. Apple Maps partly works on iPhones in China. Do not rely on Google Maps while you are on a Chinese network.
Is WhatsApp blocked in China?
WhatsApp is restricted in mainland China on local networks. It typically works over a travel eSIM that routes internationally, or over a VPN. Instagram, Facebook, and X are similarly restricted.
