The short answer

Beijing is the classic first stop in China, but it is not the easiest layover: the airports are far out and the sights are spread apart. With 8 hours you get one sight done properly; with 12 hours, a real Beijing day; with 24 hours or more, the Great Wall becomes possible.

Airport to city: the numbers

Airport To the city Cost Notes
Capital (PEK), Airport Express 25–35 min to Dongzhimen / Sanyuanqiao ¥25 Runs ~06:00–23:00, every ~10 min
Daxing (PKX), Daxing Airport Express 30–40 min to Caoqiao (Line 10) ¥35 Then Metro Line 10/14/16 onward
Taxi / DiDi 40–70 min ¥100–200 Best for late arrivals or heavy bags

Budget 45–90 minutes for immigration on arrival, more if a bank of long-haul flights lands at once. On the way out, be back at the airport 2.5 hours before an international departure.

What each window actually gives you

6 hours, stay in the terminal

Immigration, the transfer, and the return buffer consume almost everything. Not worth the stress.

8 hours: one sight, done properly

About 2.5–3 hours on the ground. The realistic pick is Tiananmen Square and a hutong walk, or the Temple of Heaven. Pick one; do not try to chain sights across the city.

12 hours: a real Beijing day

About 5–6 usable hours. Do the Forbidden City (pre-booked) plus Jingshan Park for the view over the palace roofs, and a Peking duck lunch. This is the sweet spot for a first visit.

24 hours+: add the Great Wall

Overnight in the city and use the morning for Mutianyu, roughly 1.5–2 hours each way by pre-booked car. It is quieter than Badaling and has a toboggan down. Keep the city sights for the evening before.

The route that works

  1. Clear immigration and store any bags you are not taking (left-luggage, usually ¥15–30 per bag).
  2. Airport Express to Dongzhimen, then Metro or a taxi onward.
  3. Forbidden City from the south (Tiananmen) gate → exit north → Jingshan Park.
  4. Walk a hutong near the Drum Tower or Nanluoguxiang if time allows.
  5. Return with a 2.5-hour buffer; the Airport Express is the most predictable option.

Beijing-specific traps

  • Forbidden City tickets are passport-linked and sell out. Book online before you travel.
  • PEK and PKX are on opposite sides of the city, roughly 80 km apart. A cross-airport connection is 1.5–2 hours by road: never combine it with sightseeing.
  • The Airport Express stops running just after 23:00. Late arrivals need a taxi or DiDi.
  • Winter air can be harsh and summer is hot; build in indoor stops.

Before you go

Bottom line

Beijing needs 12 hours to feel worth it and 24 to include the Wall. Pre-book the Forbidden City, use the Airport Express, and never book a cross-airport connection you also plan to sightsee on.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the Great Wall on a Beijing layover?

Only with 10 or more hours and a morning arrival. Mutianyu is roughly 1.5–2 hours from the city each way, so a wall trip is a full-day commitment that leaves no time for the Forbidden City. Below 10 hours, stay in the city.

How long does it take to get from Beijing airport to the city?

From Capital Airport (PEK), the Airport Express takes about 25–35 minutes to Dongzhimen or Sanyuanqiao and costs ¥25. From Daxing (PKX), the Daxing Airport Express reaches Caoqiao in about 30–40 minutes for ¥35.

Do I need to book Forbidden City tickets in advance?

Yes. Tickets are passport-linked, sold online in advance, and frequently sell out. Book before you fly, walk-up entry is not reliable.

PEK or PKX, which is better for a layover?

PEK is better for the classic sights (Forbidden City, hutongs, Temple of Heaven). PKX is farther south and adds transfer time. Never plan sightseeing if you arrive at one airport and depart from the other, that cross-city transfer can take 1.5–2 hours.
